Built like a house: foundation first.
Put up the walls before the foundation and they won’t stand. Your body works the same way, so care follows an order.
Imagine building the walls of a house before pouring a solid foundation: the walls would weaken and could collapse. Build the roof before the frame and you get the same problem. In chiropractic care, the foundation comes first too. Without it, lasting health elsewhere in the body is hard to reach.
Care follows a series of steps, and each one plays a part in your body’s own ability to heal:
Assessment
A thorough exam finds the underlying problem and sets a starting point for treatment.
Adjustment
Targeted adjustments correct misalignments and restore proper function.
Rehabilitation
Strengthening exercises support long-term recovery and stability.
Maintenance
Ongoing care and lifestyle changes keep you healthy and help prevent a relapse.
01The climb
The climb: three steps of care.
Care is built like a house: the foundation first. Every plan is tailored to you, but most follow the same climb, with fewer visits the higher you go.
Step 1
Relief care
Reduce the pain you came in with.
- How often
- 2–3 visits a week
- For about
- 4 to 12 weeks
Step 2
Corrective care
Restore full function, so it doesn’t come back.
- How often
- 4–8 visits a month
- For about
- 6 to 24 months
Step 3
Wellness care
Keep your body in good working order.
- How often
- 1–4 visits a month
- For about
- Ongoing
Visit counts are typical ranges. Yours depend on your condition, your overall health and your goals.
Step 1: Relief care
The first goal is to reduce the pain you came in with. People often think they are healthy as long as nothing hurts, but pain is a poor guide: a cavity doesn’t hurt while it forms, only once it has. Relief care usually means 2 to 3 visits a week for 4 to 12 weeks, depending on how severe the problem is. More about relief care.
Step 2: Corrective care
Here the goal is to restore your body to full function and give muscles and tissues time to heal more completely, which helps prevent future injuries. Visits become less frequent: about 4 to 8 a month for 6 to 24 months. Stretches and exercises in the office and at home speed things up, and the occasional flare-up is normal while you heal. More about corrective care.
Step 3: Wellness care
Once you are out of pain and fully healed, periodic adjustments help you avoid problems in the future, much like regular exercise and a good diet. Depending on your lifestyle and goals, that is a quick visit 1 to 4 times a month. More about wellness care.
